6th grade students learn the first Daf of their Gemara Perek, Alu Metzio

6th grade students learn the first Daf of their Gemara Perek, Alu Metzio

6th Grade Judaics is incredibly proud of Mordechai Gopin, Alex Ostrozinsky, and Max Braunshweiger. They have not only learned the first Daf of our Gemara Perek, Alu Metzios. But they have demonstrated tremendous review in their own time, and gave up their recess time to say over the Gemara in their own words to Rabbi Forgosh (some even by heart without their Talmud or review packet).

A big focus of class has been you don’t have to pick between being a Talmud Chacham or having a professional career. Review in the Gemara, especially in your own words really helps us gain Shas. Anybody can do it, and these students should be our example! We are very excited to see further achievement.

What fun!

Middle School Students Begin the Photoshop Component of their Computer Science Curriculum

Middle School Students Begin the Photoshop Component of their Computer Science Curriculum

Middle School students began the Photoshop component of their computer science class curriculum. They began with learning about the different tools available on the interface, and how they can use those to create solid, patterned and gradient backgrounds.

Additionally, they were introduced to the different blending options that can be applied to layers . As a starter project, the students were tasked with using the different ways to create a background, and then use the layer blending options to decorate and “dress up” a text layer containing their name.

In the coming weeks, students will continue to learn more of the basics such as photo and color manipulation, using layer selection tools, background and object removal plus much more!

Zachs Spirit of Judaism Award at the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford’s 2020 Annual Meeting & Celebration. Inspired by her mother, Maya’s passion for teaching Hebrew language is exemplified through her interactions with our elementary school children. Maya’s greatest joy is when her former students speak to her in Hebrew or recall the things she taught them. Her heartfelt remarks can be heard below

Elementary Students Welcome Back to School

Elementary Students Welcome Back to School

Welcome back, Lower Division students! What a joy to all be together – even six feet apart and sporting masks – after a long absence. It took no time at all for students to become acclimated to changes in routine and protocols. We look forward to officially kicking off the school year tomorrow!

Holocaust Survivor Miriam Schreiber Receives Honorary Diploma at New England Jewish Academy

Holocaust Survivor Miriam Schreiber Receives Honorary Diploma at New England Jewish Academy

WHAT A SPECIAL DAY!! Mazel Tov to Miriam Schreiber on receiving an honorary degree of the New England Jewish Academy today!!

West Hartford resident Miriam Schreiber was 7 years old and eagerly looking forward to beginning school in eastern Europe when World War II broke out and put an end to her formal education.
Surviving bitter Siberian forced-labor camps, post-war displacement and continued discrimination and anti-Semetism in post-war Europe, Miriam and her late husband Saul moved to the Hartford area and together built a beautiful life and family. She was self-educated, learning 6 different languages along the way, but always regretted not receiving a formal education.
A few months ago, Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford (JFS) brought a few students from the New England Jewish Academy (NEJA) to meet with Miriam and hear her story. They were so inspired that they wanted her to graduate alongside them, receiving an honorary diploma at their graduation. COVID-19 hit and canceled their graduation but NEJA and JFS wanted to make sure that Miriam still had her moment.
Today, in a small ceremony, NEJA presented Miriam with an honorary high school diploma – fulfilling a decades-long dream of hers.
Thank you to Miriam Apter Brander, Erica Ritzer Kapiloff, Dr. @Richard & Doris Loeb Nabel, Juanita & Yitz Moss and so many others for making this possible!!
